Blog #10: Self Reflection

1. I think so far I am at a P level because I have everything I need completed, the only thing I don't have is my service learning and that is because the woman quit her job. I am still in the process of looking for other places. I have also gone above and beyond with most of my research checks.

2. One thing I have done well on is being better at looking up reliable information. It is hard to find countable research on nutrition because everything is mostly about propaganda, but I have slowly learned how to pinpoint what is propaganda and what isn't.

3. One thing I would like to improve on would be finding a service learning place. Hopefully, I will have a set place by next week.

Blog #9: Science Fair Proposal

1.  If a person is a certain race, then they may be more susceptible to obesity.

2. Dependent Component: How much weight is being lost.
Independent Component: The race of the people on a diet.
Controlled Variables: How much food is being eaten.

3. This relates to my senior project EQ because the whole point to my EQ is living healthy and I am trying to find out if it is harder for certain races to get healthy by seeing if obesity runs more in a certain race.

4. I plan to Find data on the NIH and CDC websites and check to see the statistics on how many people are obese. I will also try to work with programs that help people go on a healthy diet such as Weight Watchers or Curves and get data from them as far as the type of people who sign up and how much weight they loose. I will also check for statistics on whether certain races have certain metabolism pace.

5. I think the closest category to this would be Behavioral/Social Science. This is because I am checking to see if certain races correlate with obesity.

Blog #8: What I've learned so far

Q: What have you learned how to do since you started working on your senior project?
A: I know dealing it is hard to find the legitimate research when dealing with research, but i have slowly learned how to identify which can be trusted and which can't be. Although, I am still learning, I can somewhat tell research that are formed by the food industries as propaganda and information coming from a real source.

This is the cover of the book.
This is around the beginning of the book.
This is the towards the end of the book.
Photo: This is an example of the research I am looking at where I know the food industry does not use to give out false information. I know this because it talks about how the food industry creates false propaganda for their own benefit within the introduction.

Q: What research helped you to do this and how?*
A: This research helped me out with what I learned because of the facts it stated in the introduction. This book is called Eating for Life by Bill Phillips. Someone else that also helped me was Mr.Ogden because he was the first one to point out that food industries don't always state the truth on their labels and got me digging deep into finding actual research.

Blog #7: Independent Component 1 Plan Approval

Q: Write a description of what you plan on doing for your independent study component.
A: So far the only thing I've gotten planned for what I am going to do for my independent component is to go on a diet myself. Well, not a diet, but an attempt on changing what I eat to live a healthy lifestyle. I'm thinking about doing this because this will tell me first hand what it takes to go on this change and how hard it actually is. I would learn how much motivation it takes and what I need to achieve this healthy lifestyle.

Q: Describe in detail how you think your plan will meet the 30 hours work requirement.
A: I plan on meeting the 30 hours required by keeping a food diary and recording everything I eat so that I would be on this diet 24 hours a day,

Q: How does your independent study component relate to your EQ?
A: This relates to my EQ because my goal is to find out how I can change my diet so that I would be able to live a healthy lifestyle, and in order to live a healthy lifestyle I must actually pursue my diet plans and from that I have to find out what it takes to follow through with those plans.

Blog #6: Defining the Essential Question

Essential Question:
What is the best way to achieve a nutritionally healthy lifestyle?

Definitions:

  • nutritionally: only regarding the diet, not exercising
  • healthy: being free from obesity, anorexia, heart problems (from eating unhealthy foods), etc.
  • lifestyle: a diet that I can stick to instead of being temporary
Possible Answers:

  • Education (about how to read nutrition labels)
  • Understanding the food industry and how they advertise what they call "healthy foods"
  • Being able to have the drive to stick to your plan of a healthy lifestyle
Most important source:
My most important source so far was my interview with someone who worked at the gym. She taught me a lot about how to stay healthy and what people should eat. She told me that different people have different diets which made me realize, I need to focus on understanding what is healthy and unhealthy to find what kind of diet is good for me. She also taught me a little about the lies nutrition labels hold that are unknown to the general public.

Blog #4: Presentation Reflection

Q: In what way did the first interview affect your presentation?  Please explain, be specific and use an example.
A: The first interview affected my presentation because she was the one who told me that food labels can lie to you. She also used protein bars at the gym as examples and told me how people use them incorrectly, therefore they were not effective. Another example of something she taught me that I applied to my presentation was how to read part of the label. She told me that processed sugar was always bad and how to find it in the nutrition label.

Q: What you say stood out about your presentation performance and why?
A: I would say the facts I gave out would be something that stood out about my presentation because everyone was shocked or grossed out once they found out what was really in the cheese-itz and coffee mate.

Q: What was the most challenging to do and why?
A: The most challenging thing to do was the time because I thought I was more prepared than I actually was even though we created a plan. Next time, I will actually perform some practice presentations before I do the real one so that I know exactly everything I have do.

Blog #3: Senior Project Presentation 1

5 Minute Rough Draft

Objective:
My objective is to inform the students about what they eat. I want to show them that what they are eating is not always good, even if the label says otherwise.

Procedure:
1. Intro:
-What do you guys no about nutrition?
-Call anyone give me examples on something healthy to eat?
    -What about something unhealthy?

2. I will be bringing in some examples to talk about. These examples will be be foods that people mistakenly perceive as being something healthy.

  • Baked Beans
  • Ramen Noodles
  • Saltines (crackers)
  • Diet Soda
  • Soda (talk about how it can work to remove the rust on your metals)
  • Dried Fruit
  • Granola Bars
  • Low-Fat Salad Dressing
  • Protein Bars
3. Explain why these foods and drinks are bad, maybe give healthier substitutions.

4. Conclusion

Check For Understanding:
Ask students what are examples of unhealthy foods again.

Resources and Materials:
Unhealthy foods to show the class as props.

Blog #2: Interview Check

Q: Who are you interviewing and why?
A: I am going to interview my aunt, Jennifer Tran, who works at Kaiser. Her job is to prepare and serve patients at the hospital. I have chosen her as my first interview because she has to have a lot of knowledge about nutrition to be able to know what patients can eat what. It would be a good start to my topic because I could ask her about the basics in nutrition and find out what foods are good or bad for people.

Q: What additional questions will you ask them?
A: The questions I will ask besides the 5 required are:
What are the bad effects to having an unhealthy diet?
What happens if the patients do not follow their specific diet?
How do you know what a patient should eat?
What should I do first to begin my change to having a healthier diet?

Blog #1: Senior Project Topic

Q: What is your topic?
A: Nutrition

Q: Why?
A: I want to do my senior project on nutrition because I want to learn how to change my eating habits for the better. I got inspired to do so after Mr. Ogden talked to our class and shared interesting facts about unhealthy living. One of the things he said was that everything we are currently eating might not effect us now, but it will catch up with us in our 30's or 40's. The foods that we are eating now may lead to heart disease, diabetes, and possibly an early death. After this I knew I had to make a change because my daily diet consists of mostly fast food and junk food. I also knew that if I wanted to make this big change I would have to be dedicated and do a lot of research, instead of just reading one book, so I decided to make this my senior project.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish after studying this topic this year?
A: In the end, I hope to accomplish a healthier life style. Although, I don't plan on going to the extreme and completely give up everything. I just want to find a good balance of being able to enjoy what I eat and being healthy.
